NEW RELEASE

We are more than happy to announce our first Rebuild records 001 release:
CONVICTION - NON SERVIAM cd pack
You can get this CD on our shows, CRNA OVCA- Rebuild HQ in Novi Sad or send us email if you want to order it. DIY or DIE.

CONVICTION
Another band of quality from Novi Sad is Conviction, playing old school, metal-influenced hardcore. They have tens and tens of concerts behind them and they are not afraid of speaking out about their opinions on the society and the problems surrounding them, giving their best to return the consciousness, attitudes and proper thinking to the hardcore scene. They featured the song “Pay the Piper, on the SKC compilation in 2007. Also, they have published a 4-song demo “Abandoned Hope” in 2008, being available for free download all around the Internet.
Borko: All in all, Conviction was never and never will be a part of the scene when it comes to fashion, trends and other shallow nonsense. We play for ourselves and the crowds raging at our shows. We are explicitly against any form of religion and our songs mostly speak of freedom that all of us should seek in whatever we love, without the constraints of the church, the monetary system, capitalism, taboos and other blindnesses of these types. The energy interwoven throughout our music is there to connect people from all over the underground scene. Thus, all open-minded and intelligent people are more than welcome at our dark masses.

Gig review: Downfall of Gaia Eastern European Tour 2011, day two. Novi Sad

18 October, day two - Novi Sad, Serbia

Being wrapped in sheets like a caterpillar and near the core of the source of warmth provided a really good night sleep. "Panta Rhei" was an excellent place to crash and in the morning it managed to get everyone up and running quickly. Morning rituals were done, some of us even washing their hair with cold water despite the existence of a warm batch ("C" is "H" and "H" is "C", isn't that obvious, backwards universe?) and pretty soon we started packing up the equipment into the van. I was given the task to help with packing the merch and I succeeded in not breaking/burning/destroying anything in the process. Once everything was done and we said our goodbyes to the owner of the club and the cuddliest dog on the planet, we went to hit the road.
There was a quick stop at a nearby supermarket and when the first gas station was in sight the parking lot was ours! What followed was a beautiful vegan feast on the sunny concrete and more proof of how much sharing food with people can be astonishingly bonding. After lots of coffee, bread, ajvar and all sorts of delicious food, the open road was hit again...though only for a short while, since the van was stopped by the forces of law and chaos. Of course the high IQ policemen had no knowledge of English, thus I had to quickly jump out of the van and try to save the day. Luckily, they weren't being overtly hostile, so after a confession from one of them that "he can understand everything, except a nose piercing", we were free to continue the journey to Novi Sad. Largely uneventful, except for an instance when I laughed so hard that I started crying (you sexy Bjorn you) the trip was fast and short, thus we pretty much arrived to the venue earlier than expected. We were greeted by Aleksandar, drummer of "Reflections of Internal Rain" and my look-alike brother from another mother, a running joke connected to us in the Novi Sad scene. I was quite surprised and happy to see him, finally being able to talk in person a bit and spend some time together, so the van was closed fast and we set off to guide our German guests through the city.
After a long walk toward the Petrovaradin fortress and surrounding area, we returned to the heart of the city to grab some delicious food from Dule, singer of "Reflections of Internal Rain" who had a perfect fitting job of feeding the travelers. He pretty much managed to make me want to eat the plate itself due to the inexpressibly delicious food, so a quick note to all worldwide bands: if you have a tour over Europe, drop by to Novi Sad if only just to taste Dule's dishes! The band and the rest of the tour companions seemed to be tired and sleepy, so I took the task of washing the dishes and give them a chance to chill out a bit. Later, equipment was set and a sound check performed at around 7 PM, which I had the privilege to attend and offer my ear skills.
Some notes concerning the venue, since I now realized that I haven't mentioned it so far. The hanging out, eating, sleeping and the gig itself took place in "CK13", the famous Youth Center in Novi Sad. I have talked about this venue in some previous gig reviews, but it has been a while since my last visit and as much as I saw the venue changed a lot, in the most positive of ways. Even in the past, this gig space was one of my favorites in Serbia and I was extremely glad to see it evolve even further. This time I got to see the "backstage", as well as the small library connected to the gig room, which is filled with some alternative/underground books and zines, the kitchen and the sleeping quarters/offices which are nested a floor higher. The entire venue provides a really comfortable feel to the visitor, since it is somehow secluded from the rest of the city, despite it being in the heart of it and literally offers you with everything you need. As for the actual gig room, it managed to impress me a lot, radiating with the most clean and excellent sound during the show.
In any case, prior to the concert and during the show, I had the chance to meet up and talk to some friends from Novi Sad, as well as meeting the good friend and colleague on the blog, Luka, with whom I haven't talked in person for more than a year. I also grabbed the chance to get to know some new nice people along the way, especially the youngsters of the scene. Haha, it was so funny when dear old friend Vuk addressed me as "the screamo god of Serbia" and promoting my blog in the process. In any case, I was extremely glad to see new faces, especially younger ones, being interested into the whole underground music, since in Belgrade it is somewhat stagnant and dying.
So, after a lot of social mingling and just having a good time, the gig started, "Reflections of Internal Rain" breaking the murmur of the audience, since sadly "Furtive Forest" couldn't play that night. Most of you know by now that this band is one of the most loved Serbian acts by yours truly and it was a real pleasure seeing them live once again. They recently returned from a tour with "Birds In Row" and I was amazed with how much energy and strength they managed to bring back. The stage was constantly bursting with movement and jumping and dancing around, their music even driving the audience maximally, which was quite cool since I remember the Novi Sad crowd being not much into expressing body movement before. Their set featured the majority of tracks from their latest release, "Answers" and some older songs such as "Resurrection", "My Promise" and "Sunset of the End". I'll be honest here, of course, and repeat myself that the new songs didn't manage to completely impress me, as much as the "Last Flood" material did. Those songs are absolutely top notch and make me really proud that the band hails from these parts, though they didn't grab my attention that much. I really settled down to this band being a bit depressive and with a slightly melancholic, yet aggressive and direct tone, which somewhat changed on the new recordings. "Answers" provides a lot of experimental sounds and extreme amounts of melodic and twisted tones, which I am not yet used to hear under their name. Guess I just need more time, right? All in all, their set was excellent to behold, most importantly because of the amount of passion which materialized in front of your eyes while you look at them and it is really beautiful to see the band being so alive and kicking after all these years.
"Downfall of Gaia" came up next and managed to blow my brains away. I thought that the Backa Topola show was astounding, but this gig just left me stunned and shaking. The venue and its clear sound and acoustic came to aid the band, morphing their tunes into a incredibly strong thunderstorm of tones and emotion. Songs which were performed were the same as on the previous gig, but the sheer experience was increased a tenfold in the most positive of ways. Every drop of emotion that could have possibly been present when the songs were written was transferred to the crowd in the purest of forms, an impact hit that simply can't be forgotten. From the very opening sound and all until the end, I was standing as if on needles from the intensity of the music wrapping around me. The switch between "Prolog" and "Odium" was so powerful for instance, that it made me literally confused at what to do with myself at the given time, creating a wish to just meld myself with the sound and somehow aid it. Their entire set was such a pleasure to watch and it was definitely the best show for me in the duration of these four days. I was so happy with the reaction of the audience as well, everyone just sticking around and being entranced with the soundscape, releasing the deserved ovations toward the band after each song. In the end, the crowd cheered, but went silent quickly and it was so funny how after my initial screaming of the word "more" the audience rippled with more claps and yells, resulting in us getting one additional song.
All around, this was an amazing show, both for the audience and the band. I was really happy that the band was satisfied with everything and it is so nice that they went away with a great experience in their hearts. After the gig, we hanged out around the venue, grabbed the chance to talk to some more friends of mine and FINALLY grasped the chance to get a "Reflections of Internal Rain" shirt and once again being faced with the joke of Aleksandar and me being twins. The funniest thing was that Toni from "Downfall of Gaia" reminds me of Aleksandar, who also agreed on the fact when I told him, so now we are actually triplets! Later, the weary travelers went upstairs into the resting quarters where the possibility to finally take a shower emerged. Caterpillar mode again ensued and a night filled with rest.

Hardcore in Novi Sad: More than Music

"This is the column about the Hardcore Novi Sad scene and interview with the RC crew from local newspapers "Dnevnik" on Sunday, June 19, 2011. Big THANKS comes to Borko from Conviction for translating this article" - Bojan

In Novi Sad, it all started to roar back in 1983, when the punk scene witnessed the appearance of Vrisak Generacije, being a band different, tougher and faster than others. Gaga and the crew, looking up to Discharge, GBH and other similar British hardcore punk bands of those times, made a huge impression on people wherever they played. Mister Joint was mingling with the hardcore sound, but Kapetan Lesi was definitely the first band from Novi Sad that based its influences on American hardcore. Their songs could easily be added to the Minor Threat discography. Immediately afterwards, a hardcore grind band Fear of Dog hit the scene, leaving a strong impression. Then, the 90s came and brought numerous young bands such as Mitesers, Prolece, Kataklizma Zvuka, Serum ID, Fat Mama Sex, Buka za Decu, Chronic Infection, No Speed Limit etc. It all lasted for less than a decade, when nothing but silence overtook the scene. Lockdown, as a band, appeared in these hard, “sceeneless” times, being one of prime hardcore bands from this part part of the world.

by Edvard

Sholja: After years of sleepiness and apathy on the scene, we have decided to organize ourselves, strengthen our bonds and connections, improve our communication and build a sense of community through our own diversities. The hardcore of today has many subgenres but the idea and the message are the same. Rebuild Collective was founded, being a fellowship of friends enjoying music, organizing gigs with bands which share the same attitudes, both from our country and from abroad, make fanzines, take photos from concerts and organize movie projections, promoting all that hardcore music is. All that we do we finance on our own, doing it all out of love and passion for hardcore, in order to help one another and provide insight for younger people who are into this kind of music. This is our time and our “Hardcore Novi Sad” scene. We want the scene to be as good as possible, inspiring people and helping them feel good during the events that we organize and to remember that we improve ourselves as individuals, taking care of one another since this is the only way of creating a productive society the name of which we will proudly carry within our hearts.

This is how it all started:

I remember I made friends with a guy from the Boulevard who played a VHS cassette to me, containing a live footage of a daytime concert in the Garuda club. That was unimaginable for me, seeing people in Judge, Youth of Today, Ignite and other such T-shirts, creating an atmosphere worthy of any hardcore concert in America during the 80s. Moreover, the whole thing was happening in broad daylight and it made me turn around and see that there was nothing even close to the atmosphere and the story empowering the scene of Novi Sad during the 90s. Despite the hardships in the state and the society, these people managed to maintain a healthy level of consciousness, pushing the scene in the right direction. After the 90s, the situation became a bit slower, the attitudes softer and all the people more prone to apathy and lethargy. If someone would mention any idea about a healthy, collective scene where people think with their own minds and rise against the conventional status quo of the concerts in 2000, possibly taking over the current attitude of mere support and clapping, he/she would receive nothing but laughs and whispers behind the back. The hardcore scene was not ignored by the popularization of the Internet and all of its vices and flaws either. We were granted every single information we wanted to get, but we never received any catalysts, merely getting our hands on the music promoted by the largest of all record companies, from people who wanted to exploit our freedom and lifestyle. Hardcore was never just a genre of music but, rather, it was, and is, a whole lot more. It is a struggle for preserving and creating a healthy level of consciousness by promoting tolerance, the rights of both humans and animals, communication and absence of violence as means of solving problems and promoting a positive way of thinking both for an individual and the society as a whole.
photo above: Ground Zero
by Tamas Bernath

Ground Zero

After the sleepy 2000s, Ground Zero contributed to and thrived for the above mentioned consciousness. Their sound is a fusion of extreme metal and fast hardcorepunk music played by Catharsis and Converge, the neocrust scene, the hardcore of the 90s and black metal. Their lyrics are based on their attitudes towards interpersonal relationships, the social clichés and the human nature, stretching all the way through conceptually arranged themes, all without the shallow political connotations and any chanting of such. Throughout the years, their friendship and passion towards creativity, the stage and extreme sound has kept them together. The band published: “Possess me”, “Last Goodbye”, “Morbus Panonicus” and a couple of DIY compilations. Also, they have promoted our scene by touring Russia.

ROIR

One of the more popular bands regarding the hardcore genre in Europe is our own Reflections of Internal Rain, recognizable for consisting of academic artists and a lawyer. The guys are currently on their second, great European tour. They play fast hardcorepunk and neocrust. Wherever they play, they create the most beautiful of atmospheres, tempting the crowds to stage dive and dance with tons of positive energy. You definitely should check their album “Last Flood” published by SKC Novi SAD. You will be pleasantly surprised. Additionally, if you find out that they are playing your town, do not miss this opportunity.

photo above: Conviction

Currently, they are working on their first full-length album which will be more technically advanced and a 5-song EP should come out by the end of this month.

Thus, all open-minded and intelligent people are more than welcome at our dark masses.

 photo above: Through These Eyes
by Bojana Djureinovic

Through These Eyes

Through These Eyes made sure that the whole matter is not solely in the hands of modern hardcore sound. This band is a comeback creation of the singer from Strive for More, placing us into a time capsule, returning us to the golden age of the “youth crew” hardcore sound from the last years of the 80s. On their concerts, you will hear a relentless NO to consuming and slaughtering animals, abusing alcohol and drugs and another NO to barriers we stumble upon in our lives, barriers based on hatred, fears and ignorance.

Sholja: I am glad to see people who are interested in Straight Edge lifestyle again. This movement was a part of the scene from its very beginnings, but have died in our town during the 2000s. It is about a lifestyle promoting the release of the human psyche and body from all the addictions such as drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, animal abuse, human emotions and sexual intercourses, promoting responsibility towards yourself and the community, with a message never being “be better than the rest” but “be better than yourself”.
photo above: Furtive Forest
by Bojana Djureinovic

The Youth which Holds Promise

The scene has younger bands such as Furtive Forest, currently finishing their first EP. They are known for their emotional and passion-filled hardcore sound, which you can definitely feel if you visit one of their gigs. Vault of Pain have just finished a terrific album “Devastation of Humanity” and their music will remind you of bands the likes of Hatebreed. Fast as We Go Far is yet another band, which will bring you a brighter type of sound, influenced by Swedish and Californian bands like Blink 182, NOFX, Bodyjar etc. They play melodic hardcore/pop punk you are bound to like if you have ever tried stepping on the four-wheeled board, trying to surf the concrete in front of the SNP.

Additionally, other active bands on the HCNS scene are Remedy, playing a harder, NYHC-type sound and Kolaps, being quite active on the concert scene lately. Finally, the youngest members of the scene are Schoomar, Step off and Losin' it.

Rebuild Fanzine

Sholja: Since, in the pre-Internet times, we had to stay in touch with the events and the newest bands too, we used to read interviews found in fanzines until the tapes in our cassette players wore off. “Tri Drugara” was one of the best magazines dedicated to European hardcore and punk. As everything else, it too disappeared with the onset of the year 2000. A year ago, we decided to correct this mistake by starting the “Rebuild” hardcore fanzine, which is, unfortunately, the only creation of this type in our town.
Here, you can find news about the newest events in hardcore and punk music. The fanzine promotes and tries to awake the attitudes and ideas which kept us present here were we have been throughout the years, visiting hardcore concerts and listening to this type of music. Rebuild sends us a message saying that we have to observe ourselves and change ourselves first, if we are ever to change something that surrounds us.

IF A TREE FALLS: A STORY OF THE EARTH LIBERATION FRONT

Hardcore is more than music to us. So we will continue to inform you about new books, organizations, movies about human, animal or earth liberation. Don't miss this story about "Earth Liberation" activists this month. IN THEATERS JUNE 22nd...but we'll post some download link as soon as we can . REVOLT, REBEL, RESIST! - Rebuild Collective

In December 2005, Daniel McGowan was arrested by Federal agents in a nationwide sweep of radical environmentalists involved with the Earth Liberation Front-- a group the
FBI has called America's "number one domestic terrorism threat."

For years, the ELF—operating in separate anonymous cells without any central leadership—had launched spectacular arsons against dozens of businesses they accused of destroying the environment: timber companies, SUV dealerships, wild horse slaughterhouses, and a $12 million ski lodge at Vail, Colorado.

With the arrest of Daniel and thirteen others, the government had cracked what was probably the largest ELF cell in America and brought down the group responsible for the very first ELF arsons in this country.

IF A TREE FALLS: A STORY OF THE EARTH LIBERATION FRONT tells the
remarkable story of the rise and fall of this ELF cell, by focusing on the transformation
and radicalization of one of its members.

Part coming-of-age tale, part cops-and-robbers thrilller, the film interweaves a verite chronicle of Daniel on house arrest as he faces life in prison, with a dramatic recounting of the events that led to his involvement with the group. And along the way it asks hard questions about environmentalism, activism, and the way we define terrorism.

Drawing from striking archival footage -- much of it never before seen -- and intimate interviews with ELF members, and with the prosecutor and detective who were chasing them, IF A TREE FALLS explores the tumultuous period from 1995 until early 2001 when environmentalists were clashing with timber companies and law enforcement, and the word "terrorism" had not yet been altered by 9/11.

Don't forget your roots, HCNS Retrospective - Milomir, STRIFE FOR MORE part 1

The time was late 90's and hardcore scene in our town was pretty much alive. In the world "the youth crew revival" was happening and Revelation and Victory were at their best. But we had our great bands: No speed Limit, Force Union, Strife For More, Inside Out ... Maybe some of you younger hardcore kids don't know this bands from our history, and for us who know them, well we don't mind to remind of these times...
I think the first straight edge band I heard was No For An Answer sometime in 1989/90. After that, friends from Belgrade started sending us tapes with sxe hardcore bands like Minor Threat and Judge and I started getting more and more into it.
My neighbour Pecinko wore Youth Of Today shirt and I had wondered for months what it was and when I finally got the tape, I was stoked. Fast, powerful, direct and pure at the same time, I loved it. That's when I started to think about straight edge. I hadn't drunk, smoked or used drugs before anyway, which hadn't been much usual among the rest of the kids but then I finally found something where I could fit in and which was totally natural to me.
So, I've considered myself straight edge since 1990. Sxe is who I really am, it's positive, healthy and full of energy, inspiration and passion as well.

When I got into straight edge, someone told me that I should be vegetarian too, so I became one. Although I stopped eating meat only because I thought I had to if I want to be true straight edge, after 20 years of being vegetarian, I'm happy I did it. Straight edge living and music brought to my life many friendships, healthy relationships, helpful advices and positive way of thinking and I couldn't be more thankful for that. Also, Youth of Today and Shelter got me interested in Hare Krishna where I later found spiritual myself. That we are not this body, which is consisted of material elements, earth, water, fire and air. That I am not just combination of earth and water-piece of meat, but a person inside – an soul – inside of this body- spiritual being- with spiritual qualities, etc….

My band Strive For More started working seriously and in 1995. it became the first sxe band from Novi Sad and the first spiritual hardcore band from Serbia. There had been some hardcore bands in Novi Sad like Prolece, Mitesers, Buka za decu, No Speed Limit and Inside Out. Strive For More was the first band here in Novi Sad which played classic sxe hardcore influenced by Bold, YOT, INSTED, NFAA, Chain Of Strength...

If you dont know them, they started at the end of 2004 in Novi Sad. The goal was to run away from the every day worn out things and times in which we had entered. Ivan (guitar, vocal), Petar (guitar) and Aleksandar (drums) are in the band from the very beginning. Later on, Dusko gets lead vocal part and Nikola (Ground Zero) joined on bass line. Songs are about experiencing the present days, loosing close people, personal feelings, jealousness, envy, vain…
